Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Fellow with a background in the experimental geochemistry or physical chemistry of interfaces between minerals and extremely concentrated electrolyte solutions. We seek an individual with robust multi-method experimental and analytical experience in molecular-level characterization of solids and solid transformations in molar concentrations of aqueous electrolytes such as sodium hydroxide. Hands-on expertise in techniques such as in situ powder XRD, in situ NMR, in situ vibrational spectroscopies, and development or application of sophisticated data analysis techniques to resolve fundamental science questions is required. Other characterization methods of interest include but are not limited to scanning probe microscopy, colorimetry, laser-based optical spectroscopies, or conventional vacuum-chamber surface analytical spectroscopies. Demonstrable technical experience that directly relates to the target line of research of exploring radiation-induced chemical transformations occurring at the interface between minerals and concentrated electrolyte, and unraveling mechanistic pathways of these transformations, is highly desirable.

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. The successful candidate will be expected to immediately contribute to existing research projects from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, and maintain a strong regular publication record.

The opportunity is in the Geochemistry Group, in the Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate of PNNL. The Geochemistry Group is located within the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a world-class national user facility at PNNL. The successful candidate will have access to a host of state-of-the-art research equipment at this facility and at other laboratories at PNNL. The position is immediately available.
