Job Description
General Summary
We are seeking a new Post-Doctoral fellow to work in the Max Näder lab for Rehabilitation Technologies and Outcomes Research housed in the Center of Bionic Medicine located downtown at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. The Post-Doc Fellow will work independently to use machine learning techniques and data from advanced flexible wearable sensors and smart phone technology to make clinical predications and assessments. Body-worn sensors will be used to capture clinical data, including information walking and muscle function. Machine learning algorithms will be applied to make meaningful inferences and diagnostic tools for healthy and impaired populations. The position is supported by NIH, NIDILRR, and private funds provided by the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. The position also includes collaborative work with Dr. Konrad Kording at University of Pennsylvania.

A successful candidate should have a real interest in clinical problems while also strong computational skills. Proficiency in MATLAB required. Experience with Python preferred. The candidate will be expected to use state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms while developing interesting analyses. The candidate will also shape clinical decision making and conceptually help the structure the research. A moderate level of independence will be expected including the ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

Principal Responsibilities
The Post-Doc Fellow, Center for Bionic Medicine will:

  • Design, execute and interpret research pertaining to scientific questions that use machine learning and other applicable computer science techniques.
  • Develop new research questions that evolve the use of wearable sensors and applications with rehabilitation patient populations.
  • Assist with development of collaborative projects within and outside the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and test ideas for new projects development.
  • Apply for fellowships and grants for external lab funding and career development.
  • Develop, submit and publish the results of research projects in high quality journals and present data to public conferences/seminars when needed.
  • Participate weekly lab meetings, journal clubs and seminars.
  • Build and maintain a well-organized and accountable journal of own laboratory protocols, experiments, results and analyses.
  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the AbilityLab.

  • Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the assigned Principal Investigator

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Requires the academic knowledge associated with a doctorate degree in Life Sciences (PhD), Bioengineering (PhD) and/or a Medical Doctorate (MD) degree.
  • Less than 4 years of postdoctoral training.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • General knowledge or interest in rehabilitation and specific knowledge in biomedical or clinical principles of muscle tissue and muscle cell biology.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills needed to participate as a creative member of a growing research team.
  • Ability to exchange ideas and to work closely with clinicians, patients and professional organizations.
  • Willingness to network within the Institute and to independently strengthen/develop new external collaborations.
  • Ability to timely plan and to coordinate project completions.

  • Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
