Native American Studies

P

ostdoctoral Fellow.

The successful candidate must be in full residence full-time at the University of Montana, Missoula for the duration of the award period. This position will work in the Native American Studies (NAS) Department at the University of Montana (UM) and perform independent research, teach one course in the Native American Studies Department, give one public lecture, and complete one publication or creative project for publication. The successful person will also be expected to participate in departmental and Native American community events. The successful applicant will also work in collaboration with the NAS Chair, the NAS Administrative Associate as well as the NAS Program Coordinator / Advisor for NAS as appropriate, on the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Speaker series, working (with others) on a website and advertisement of events.

Position Details

The position is a 1.0 FTE Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits packaging including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.

Salary for this position is $40,000 - $41,200 per year, commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications

PhD or equivalent terminal degree; PhD must be on a Native American Studies topic and in a field of study appropriate to Native American and Indigenous Studies (Anthropology, Literature, History, Environmental Studies, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

Background working in indigenous communities

Experience teaching an NAS subject

Experience integrating health and well-being with education

Native American Studies is an academic discipline committed to examining the contemporary and past experiences and life ways of the first Americans from their perspective. The curriculum is designed to provide a study of American Indians from a holistic and humanistic viewpoint by focusing upon their cultures, history, and contemporary life. Courses are designed for both Native American and non-Native American students so they can better understand human similarities and differences, thereby leading to the development of better communications and cross-cultural relationships.
