Job Description:

Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab s Computational Research Division has an opening for a Charged Fluids Postdoctoral Scholar. The Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) develops and applies advanced computational methodologies to solve large-scale scientific and engineering problems arising in Department of Energy (DOE) mission areas involving energy, environment, and industrial technology. The primary focus of CCSE researchers is on designing algorithms for multiscale, multiphysics problems described by nonlinear systems of partial differential equations, and in developing implementations of algorithms that target current and next-generation massively parallel computational architectures. CCSE researchers work collaboratively with application scientists to develop state-of-the-art solution methodologies in these fields.

You will be responsible for playing an active role in CCSE s basic research and development efforts in the area of modeling charged fluids. Specifically, they will focus on expanding CCSE's simulation capabilities and application of these capabilities to develop computational models for electrolytes and/or investigate the effects of electric fields on flames.

What You Will Do:

Perform basic research on the development and analysis of efficient numerical methods for modeling low Mach number fluid flows coupled to electric fields.

Perform performance profiling of algorithms for complex multiphysics applications involving charged fluids and investigate computational tradeoffs.

*

Perform massively parallel simulations of scientifically interesting phenomena.

*

Explore applications of the new algorithms and implementations for flows of interest to LBL and to DOE.

*

Interact with the larger fluids research community to explore and extend the applicability of new simulation and modeling methodologies.

*

Work in a multidisciplinary team environment including mathematicians, computer/computational scientists, and domain scientists.

*

Author peer-reviewed journal articles and contribute to research proposals.

What Is Required:

Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or the Physical Sciences/Engineering within the last 4 years, with a strong research background in applied mathematics, computational methods, and scientific computing.

Experience in high-performance computing.

*

Experience designing and/or implementing parallel algorithms for scientific applications.

*

Demonstrated research experience in algorithm development for multiphysics flow models.

*

Experience with scientific computing using C and modern Fortran.

*

Experience using MPI in parallel computing.

*

Keen interest in extending mathematical and scientific computing techniques to new problems.

*

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

*

Ability to work productively both independently and as part of a diverse team.

Notes:

This is a full time 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
