Rapid technology development and evolving consumer preferences are enabling market penetration of autonomous, connected, electric, and shared (ACES) mobility. Proliferation of these technologies has the potential to significantly alter how people travel, how goods are shipped, and how the transportation sector consumes energy.Idaho National Laboratory's (INL's) Advanced Vehicles Group is researching future charging infrastructure needs of ACES mobility and the integration of that infrastructure with the electric grid. Building on a decade of research on light-duty electric vehicles and their demand for charging, the group has expanded its scope to study how the electrification and automation of a wide array of vehicle types will affect charging infrastructure and impact the grid. Future electric vehicles, from aerial drones and automated package delivery vehicles to automated electric passenger cars, buses and long-haul trucks, will have distinct operating profiles that, in many cases, will demand extremely high-power charging. Charging these vehicles will present unique and significant challenges to energy infrastructure.Additionally, ACES mobility introduces new cybersecurity risks to vehicles and connected infrastructure. The Advanced Vehicles Group and its partners assess cybersecurity vulnerabilities and subsequent risks introduced by connected vehicles and charging infrastructure. They are also researching added challenges introduced by vehicle automation that risk safe vehicle operation and charging. To address new challenges brought on by ACES mobility, the Advanced Vehicles Group and its partners perform targeted experimentation and field evaluation, data analytics, model creation and validation, and simulation to predict the driving and charging needs of the future transportation ecosystem. They use these processes and tools to develop strategies to integrate electric vehicles with the grid, co-optimize charging and vehicle operation to maximize battery life, and mitigate cybersecurity risk. In order to rapidly accelerate this important research, INL's Advanced Vehicles Group is seeking an Autonomous Perception System Reliability Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct specialized research in verification and validation for automated vehicle perception systems. In this role, you will investigate the robustness of machine learning algorithms in autonomous vehicle perception systems under real-world dynamic environment. You will work closely with PIs and other senior researchers to perform the following: • Build perception system validation platform in hardware using cameras, LiDAR, etc. • Design a validation plan and collect real-world data using the perception system platform• Investigate the cutting-edge perception algorithms and verify their reliability using the collected data under dynamic, real-world conditions• Study methodologies to improve the reliability and robustness of the perception system QualificationsQualified candidates will meet the following criteria:• PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years • Hold a PhD in physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or related discipline with research experience in automated systems perception algorithms and systems• Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills in EnglishSpecial Requirements and/or Training:The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:• Hands-on experience with systems for computer vision, Lidar processing, and/or sensor fusion • Experience with deep learning and its applications on autonomous vehicle perception systems• Expert proficiency with programming languages such as C, C or Python• Experience with deep learning on GPU systems Selective Service Requirements To be eligible for employment at INL males between ages 18 and 25 must register (or must have registered) with the Selective Service System (SSS).
