Position Definition:

The incumbent will design, implement and oversee research projects investigating the basic mechanisms of aging involving stem cells in bone, as well as oversight and consultation regarding human research activities and research compliance.

Essential Functions:

* Perform experiments related to stem cells in bone aging, including cell culture experimentation with osteoblasts/osteoclasts, and the development and maintenance of such procedures/experimentation
* Perform whole animal experiments
* Perform biochemical and viability assays on cell culture preparations
* Design, develop and implement research protocols and strategies
* Assist with overall study design and execution
* Maintain detailed records of all work performed and data analysis; produce written reports detailing results of experiments and analysis of results; make recommendations to changes in research protocols and experiments based on findings
* Write and edit papers and manuscripts for publication
* Draft independent research proposals for grant submissions
* Develop and maintain research knowledge, including reading, participating in seminars and other educational activities, meeting with peers; present findings at national meetings as required
* Introduce new scientific procedures and techniques to the laboratory as needed
* Assist with training and supervision of postdoctoral fellows and research technicians as needed
* Perform oversight and consultation duties involving human research activities at the SFVAHCS, as assigned
* Perform oversight and consultation regarding research safety and compliance at the SFVAHCS, as assigned
* Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements• PhD in a endocrinology field required

* 3 years of postdoctoral experience required
* Extensive knowledge of basic stem cell and bone laboratory protocols and techniques in the area of bone aging and stem cell development
* Extensive knowledge of medical research methods and technology in the areas of stem cell-bone interactions
* Demonstrated advanced-level skills with laboratory equipment including microscopes, dissection tools, spectrophotometer, automatic plate readers, cell sorting
* Demonstrated advanced-level skills with human research compliance and research laboratory safety
* Demonstrated advanced-level skills with animal research techniques, regulations, and compliance
* Ability to contribute significant original/innovative ideas of methodological significance to research, as well as insights into the oversight of human research compliance and overall research lab safety
* Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities to achieve desired goals
* Ability to work independently and to exercise judgment when identifying areas which require management attention and compliance-related mediation
* Computer literacy with emphasis on Windows operating systems and software applications
* Demonstrated advanced level writing and presentation skills
* Excellent interpersonal, written/oral communication and organizational skills
