The Program in Global Noncommunicable Disease and Social Change (PGNDSC) at Harvard Medical School (HMS) is offering a Post-Doctoral Fellowship that focuses on evaluating the cost and impact of integrated service delivery strategies for severe noncommunicable diseases and injuries (NCDIs), such as type 1 diabetes and rheumatic heart disease, in highly constrained health systems. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will join a dynamic team that is led by Dr. Gene Bukhman, PGNDSC Program Director, and joined by other faculty and program staff based at the country sites supported by Partners In Health (PIH) in Malawi, Rwanda, Haiti, and Liberia.

The Fellow will play a key role in collaboration with colleagues at the country sites and HMS in developing the research designs and protocols for studies related to this initiative. The Fellow will have the opportunity for mentorship from HMS faculty with extensive experience in global health delivery research at PIH-affiliated sites and elsewhere.

The candidate will need to be well versed in working with implementers in limited-resource settings and supporting local staff in developing rigorous academic outputs. Expertise in examining health as well as economic outcomes is ideal for this position. Standard knowledge of design and analysis of data based on epidemiological studies is required. Experience with intervention costing and/or cost-effectiveness analysis is desirable. A familiarity with noncommunicable diseases and implementation science is needed.

The specific responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Significant travel to international sites to work collaboratively with local staff to identify how to utilize existing data for operational research and cost analysis on NCDs

Work closely with the PIH Monitoring, Evaluation, and Quality (MEQ) team to understand what clinical and cost data are available through the current systems that can be utilized for operational research

Identify gaps in information available and what may need to be collected to ensure operational research objectives are met

Coordinate with local staff and PIH MEQ on the development of any complementary data collection mechanisms that may be necessary

Work collaboratively with local staff on data quality and management, developing timelines and protocols for implementation and quality assurance

Offer technical support and capacity building for local staff in data management

Perform statistical analysis related to the research objectives of the initiative

Work collaboratively with local staff, PIH MEQ, and Harvard teams on manuscript writing and development

Provide workshops in research training and mentorship to build research capacity at the sites as well as within the Boston-based Global Health Delivery Partnership

Take the lead on manuscript development in line with the Fellow’s career development

Contribute to the development of research grants for submission to NIH and similar organizations

The Fellow will have the opportunity to lead key components of the research and receive mentorship from faculty members on the team. A commitment of two years is required, which will allow the Fellow to establish rapport with colleagues at the country sites as well as advance his/her career towards becoming an independent researcher through drafting first author publications and developing proposals for NIH funding.

Start date: July 1, 2018

Location: Boston, MA with significant travel

Duration: 2 years

Primary supervisor: Gene Bukhman, MD, PhD
