Job Description
Position 1:
The laboratory of Dr. Marc Vermulst is interested in hiring a highly motivated, talented post-doc to support its efforts in understanding the molecular basis of human aging. The successful applicant will be responsible for growing the research program by generating massively parallel sequencing libraries to probe the fidelity of transcription, and to determine the impact of transcription errors on the lifespan and healthspan of multicellular organisms. These experiments will initially focus on the impact of transcription errors on proteostasis in worms and mice, but it is expected that the successful applicant will ultimately steer this project into exciting new directions to acquire independent funding. Experience working with mice and worms is therefore highly desirable. The ideas that underlie this research project are closely related to those that underlie mutation research, so some experience with mutation research is required. To support the research team and develop new skills, the applicant is also invited to help his/her colleagues with experiments focused on mitochondrial disease, mitochondrial genetics and mtDNA mutations. The research environment in the Vermulst laboratory is highly collaborative, provides a broad platform for scientific development and encompasses numerous biological disciplines. As a result, it is an excellent incubator for the growth of new ideas. It is further expected that this project will result in numerous high- profile publications, which will further fuel career development. Please note that a desire to learn, good communication skills, and a willingness to work with others, is required for being successful in this research environment.
Position 2:
The laboratory of Dr. Marc Vermulst is interested in hiring a highly motivated, talented post-doc to support its efforts in understanding the role of mtDNA mutations in human aging and disease. The successful applicant will be responsible for the maintenance of two novel mouse models of mtDNA disease and a detailed set of experiments that will determine how mitochondrial genetics and mutations affect murine physiology. Experience working with mice, and a Ph.D. in molecular biology, genetics, or a related biomedical field is therefore highly desirable. These experiments will initially focus on mitochondrial function, ROS, apoptosis, and mutagenesis itself, but it is expected that the successful applicant will ultimately steer this project into exciting new directions that probe stem cell biology, carcinogenesis and subcellular genetics. To support the research team and develop new skills, the successful applicant will also be invited to help his/her colleagues with experiments that are focused on transcription, DNA damage, and DNA repair. The research environment in the Vermulst laboratory is highly collaborative, provides a broad platform for scientific development and encompasses numerous biological disciplines. As a result, it is an excellent incubator for the growth of new ideas. It is further expected that this project will result in numerous high-profile publications, as well as independent funding, which will further fuel career development. Please note that a desire to learn, good communication skills, and a willingness to work with others, is required for being successful in this research environment.
