We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research on the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide. You will actively participate in the development of next generation electrocatalysts, their characterization by various techniques including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Cyclic Voltammetry, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, as well as multiphysics simulations. This position is in the Nanoscale Integration Science group in the Materials Science Division. Essential Duties - Synthesize and characterize new electrocatalysts with novel compositions and morphologies.- Measure reactivity and characterize catalyst product composition.- Design and build electrochemical cells.- Characterize bulk and surface properties of catalysts, including morphology and composition.- Work closely with project team members across disciplines to deliver timely results.- Visit TOTAL’s research center in Feluy (Belgium) to establish partnerships on catalyst development.- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.- Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications - Recent PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline.- Experience in one or more of the following areas: electrochemistry, electrosynthesis, electrocatalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, surface chemistry, nanomaterial synthesis, fuel cells.- Experience with CO2 reduction as well as gas and liquid chromatography.- Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment. Desired Qualifications - Experience in designing, fabricating, and testing electrosynthesis cells.- Experience with multiphysics simulation software packages such as COMSOL.- Experience with Transmission Electron Microscopy, SEM, XRD, Fourier-transform Infrared, Raman, and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. Security Clearance: None required. Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.
