Job Description

Responsibilities:

Conduct research on water and salinity management including water reuse

Carbon and nutrients cycling under elevated salinity

Salinity assessment using traditional wet chemistry methods as well as remote/proximal sensing

Determine water chemistry and irrigation water quality

interaction between irrigation methods and root zone salinity

Evaluate plant responses to elevated salinity under greenhouse and field conditions

Develop protocols/management practices to manage salinity at field/watershed scale

Develop techniques/practices to improve irrigation water use efficiency

Train and supervise students

Prepare inventory and order supplies for conducting research

Occasional Duties:

Help the supervisor in developing proposals to secure grant funds

Willingness and ability to work with researchers within the group and other collaborating groups, growers and extension agents

Assist supervisor in coordinating field activities in commercially managed fields

Required Education: PhD in Soil Science or related area of specialization

Required Experience:

Experience with collecting, processing and analyzing environmental samples

Operating various laboratory instruments

Documenting experimental observations, data entry and analysis

Well versed with required statistical techniques to analyze and interpret data

Demonstrated ability to publish in peer reviewed journal

Preferred: Experience with electromagnetic induction technique, using of salinity assessment and simulation models (solute movement in soil) and, familiarity with the use of different sensors and data loggers to monitor real-time in-situ conditions

Required license: None

Preferred license: Certified Professional Soil Scientist

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively use personal computer to communicate, prepare proposals to include cost information on spread sheet as applicable, and provide reports of activities. Ability to effectively communicate with faculty, students and staff. Familiarity with appropriate laboratory, farm and/or technical equipment. Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
