Job Description
The Applied Materials & Performance group at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is seeking a metallurgist/materials scientist with expertise in aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, and steels to help develop the next generation of transportation technologies. This post-doctoral position will perform research, write manuscripts for journal publications, and support development of research proposals. The candidate will perform or assist with mechanical testing such as tension, compression, formability, hardness, etc. The candidate will perform or assist with sample preparation and microstructural analysis, such as for optical metallography, SEM, TEM, etc. The candidate will be responsible for preparing and handling test samples, plotting and analyzing test data, and creating high-quality reports and presentations.

The Applied Materials & Performance group at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is seeking a metallurgist/materials scientist with expertise in aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, and steels to help develop the next generation of transportation technologies. This post-doctoral position will perform research, write manuscripts for journal publications, and support development of research proposals. The candidate will perform or assist with mechanical testing such as tension, compression, formability, hardness, etc. The candidate will perform or assist with sample preparation and microstructural analysis, such as for optical metallography, SEM, TEM, etc. The candidate will be responsible for preparing and handling test samples, plotting and analyzing test data, and creating high-quality reports and presentations.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications
Required skills:
• Expertise in physical metallurgy of Al alloys and/or Mg alloys
• Attention to detail in the laboratory
• The ability to organize research data in the context of the technical literature into high-quality presentations and publications in high-impact journals
• Hands-on experience with tension/compression/fatigue testing and plotting and analyzing stress-strain/fatigue data
• Ability to analyze microstructural data (e.g., optical metallography, SEM, TEM, EBSD, XRD, EDS, APT, etc.) and correlate to mechanical properties in metallic alloys.
Desirable skills:
• Expertise in physical metallurgy of metals and alloys such as steels, nickel superalloys, high-entropy alloys, etc.
• Hands-on experience with performing limiting dome height tests, understanding of sheet metal formability and forming limit diagrams, and experience in using strain-grid analysis (e.g. CAMSYS software) and DIC techniques (e.g. Correlated Solutions, Aramis, etc. software) to quantify sheet metal formability
• Experience with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and other thermal analysis techniques
• Hands-on experience with furnaces and ovens for heat treatment
• Experience with indentation hardness measurements (macro-, micro-, nano-)
• Experience with plasticity modeling
• Experience with thermomechanical (e.g., rolling, extrusion) and joining processes
• Experience in metal casting and using solidification software (e.g. Pro-CAST).
Software skills:
Must be proficient in data plotting software (e.g. Excel, Kaliedagraph, etc.), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), image processing (Photoshop), and engineering drawing software (e.g., AutoCAD/SolidWorks). Experience with writing macros for automating data gathering and plotting is a plus.
PhD in metallurgy, materials science and engineering, or related field from an accredited college or university, preferably with thesis work in physical metallurgy of Al-alloys and/or Mg-alloys.
3.75 GPA or higher is preferred.
