The Department of Civil and Environmental is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to work in the area of coastal sediment dynamics in support of research addressing the future of coastal wetlands and beaches in southern California considering the changing climate and watershed conditions. We are interested in advancing models that account for human influences such as dredging, beach nourishment, thin layer augmentation of wetlands, and watershed controls alongside natural processes for which models are quite mature. We seek a candidate who brings a strong educational background in process-based modeling with a high potential and drive to develop and demonstrate research leadership (e.g., identifying research questions, leading research tasks, leading authorship of research papers) and make new research contributions to the field(s) of morphodynamic modeling, coupled human/natural systems, and socio-hydrology. Experience in one more of the following areas are particularly desirable: coastal hydro-morphodynamic modeling, coupled human-natural systems modeling, ecological engineer/modeling, and statistical representation of extreme events. Experience with field studies in the coastal zone (e.g., beaches, embayments, wetlands, estuary systems), geographical information systems, programming, and basic statistical analyses is also desirable. The successful candidate will interact with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, social scientists and biologists.
Qualifications: The candidate must have a Ph.D. in civil/environmental engineering, earth sciences or a related field from an accredited university and a record of relevant research leadership in the form of first-authored research papers.
The postdoctoral scholar will work with Professor Brett Sanders (http://sanders.eng.uci.edu) and his research group. Initial appointment will be a 12-month period, renewable subject to performance and funding availability. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
