Finger Lakes Institute

The Finger Lakes Institute (FLI) at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) invites applications for a one-year, with possible renewal, endowed Post-Doctoral Research Scientist to join collaborative efforts investigating biogeochemical and/or ecological processes underpinning aquatic environments in the Finger Lakes. Scholarly interest including mercury cycling, cyanobacterial blooms, biological invasion, and/or nutrient dynamics are preferred. The successful candidate is expected to pursue external grant support and provide scientific expertise to the FLI's community-focused education and outreach programs.

This position requires independent work while leading specific project deliverables and collaborating with faculty members from a variety of departments on campus and in the Finger Lakes region. A successful applicant will demonstrate excellent organizational skills, experience in the field and lab, and the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time. The research scientist will supervise undergraduate students in the lab and have the ability to assist with student research projects. There is a possibility of teaching one undergraduate course per year at HWS pending applicant interest, curricular need, and departmental approval.

The FLI is dedicated to the promotion of environmental research and education about the Finger Lakes and surrounding environments. In collaboration with regional environmental partners and state and local government offices, the Institute fosters environmentally-sound development practices throughout the region and disseminates accumulated knowledge to the public. In addition to various laboratory facilities and equipment at FLI and HWS, the Colleges own and operate a 65-foot research vessel, the R/V William Scandling, for research activities on Seneca Lake. Additionally, HWS researchers use a pontoon boat and Boston Whalers for field work within the Finger Lakes region. Please see www.hws.edu./fli/

for a description of other facilities and equipment available at the FLI and on the HWS campus.

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits eligible appointment. Modest funding for research supplies and equipment as well as conference travel is available. Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. upon start date. The initial one-year appointment can be renewed based on satisfactory performance. The benefit package includes but is not limited to: 20 days of vacation each year, 10 paid holidays, sick time, personal days; medical, dental, and vision insurances; long-term disability coverage; life insurance; and retirement benefits. This position is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
