Requisition # ). This NIH-funded laboratory focuses on lungu00a0epithelialbiology and the response to injury in normal and pathological conditions. Thelaboratory has projects in acute lung injury, lung infections, and fibrosisusing a variety of cell based, murine models, and human samples for translationalwork. The specific project being offered is working on influenza-induced lunginjury as an extension of our recently published findings (doi:10.1164/rccm.201509-1878OC). In this work, the postdoctoral scientist willstudy the innate immune functions in the lungs after influenza infection andtest some novel hypotheses on how syndecan-1, a cell surface proteoglyan,regulates theu00a0resolution of lung inflammation after injury. Theenvironment is within the Womenu2019s Guild Lung Institute, where a number of postdoctoratescientists,u00a0researchu00a0associates, and graduate studentscontinueu00a0high impact work under the guidance of prominent investigators tounderstand theu00a0mechanisms of various lung diseases ( ). Furthermore, these researchers are highly interactiveandu00a0collaborative in their approach tou00a0science with weekly jointresearch meetings and journal clubs. The postdoctoral scientist is expectedto worku00a0independently but in close cooperation and in consultation withthe Principal Investigator and other Research Scientists. The PostdoctoralScientist will perform routine and complex laboratory procedures throughouttraining period and may develop, adapt, and implement new research techniquesand protocols. He/she will analyze and interpret data, assist in preparation ofgrant proposals, and participate in publications and presentations as author orco-author. For eager postdoctoral scientists interested in applying for grantfunding, mentorship will be provided, but there isu00a0no requirement forgenerating grant funding in this position. DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC u2013 ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:u2022 Monitors and ensures compliance with safety standards and procedures. u2022 Independently creating and updating protocols for all research in thelaboratory (e.g., IACUC).u2022 Understand the basic premise of all the laboratory projects and helpinglaboratory members carry out their research as needed. Facilitate publications and grant applications by:u2022 Generating new data for the research projectu2022 Analyzes data and prepares scientific findings for publication as author orco-author. u2022 Work independently on a project and push it forward into novel areasu2022 Help other laboratory members move their project in novel directionsu2022 Compile and organize the data generated by members of the laboratory andcreate appropriate figures with statistical analysisu2022 Overseeing all work in the laboratory to ensure it is carried out with thehighest scientific rigor Other duties include:u2022 Providing miscellaneous clinical/research support (ad hoc data analysis,hypothesis development, programming, troubleshooting, etc.). u2022 Organizing clinical/research trials in conjunction with the PrincipalInvestigator and sponsor and/or funding source.u2022 Making independent presentations. u2022 Providing system administration and maintenance for the local workstationnetwork. u2022 Training Research Lab Assistants, Research Fellow, lower level ResearchAssociates, and other related support staff and may be requested by PI to takeon specific supervisory activities. EducationalRequirements: Doctorate (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in areadirectly related to field of research specialization Experience: Works independently on research projectsdesigned by a mentor (typically the PI) within area of specialization. Acquiresthorough technical and theoretical knowledge of research project and objectivesduring one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment. Demonstrated aptitudeto perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed datacollection, and analysis and operation and maintenance of specializedequipment. Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of specializedequipment. Physical Demands: Able to perform moderate lifting. Able to sit,stand, and walk for prolonged periods of time. Able to read papers and onlinedocuments. Able to operate standard office equipment.
