Job Information Job Title: Electromagnetic Field Modeling Postdoctoral Research AssociateOrg: Energy Storage & Advanced VehiclesContact: Delisa.Rogers@inl.govWork Location: Idaho Falls, ID (Town) Mission/Vision Statement Empowering the Nation's Energy Future Mission: Discover, demonstrate and secure innovative nuclear energy solutions, other clean energy options and critical infrastructure. Vision: INL will change the world's energy future and secure our critical infrastructure.Responsibilities The transportation sector is on the verge of dramatic change. Rapid technology development and evolving consumer preferences are enabling market penetration of autonomous, connected, electric, and shared (ACES) mobility. Proliferation of these technologies has the potential to significantly alter how people travel, how goods are shipped, and how the transportation sector consumes energy.Idaho National Laboratory's (INL's) Advanced Vehicles Group is researching future charging infrastructure needs of ACES mobility and the integration of that infrastructure with the electric grid. Building on a decade of research on light-duty electric vehicles and their demand for charging, the group has expanded its scope to study how the electrification and automation of a wide array of vehicle types will affect charging infrastructure and impact the grid. Future electric vehicles, from aerial drones and automated package delivery vehicles to automated electric passenger cars, buses and long-haul trucks, will have distinct operating profiles that, in many cases, will demand extremely high-power charging. Charging these vehicles will present unique and significant challenges to energy infrastructure. To address new challenges brought on by ACES mobility, the Advanced Vehicles Group and its partners perform targeted experimentation and field evaluation, data analytics, model creation and validation, and simulation to predict the driving and charging needs of the future transportation ecosystem. They use these processes and tools to develop strategies to integrate electric vehicles with the grid, co-optimize charging and vehicle operation to maximize battery life, and mitigate cybersecurity risk. In order to rapidly accelerate this important research, INL's Advanced Vehicles Group is seeking an Electromagnetic Field Modeling Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct specialized research in electromagnetic field design and modeling. In this role, you will do the following:• Work closely with PIs and other senior researchers to develop electro-magnetic (EM) field models to design novel wireless power transfer concepts • Participate in collaborative research activities to translate these theoretical concepts into innovative solutions for electrified transportation and other applications• Develop methods to predict and mitigate stray EM-field emissions for compliance with exposure limits standardsYou will be expected to openly and collaboratively conduct work, including publishing results and developing proposals, with other INL scientists who are renowned experts in electric vehicle wireless power transfer system characterization, power electronics, energy storage, and cybersecurity. You will bring to the team expertise in electromagnetic field analysis, modeling and simulation, and validation through laboratory experimentation and measurement. You will occasionally interact with Department of Energy (DOE) program managers, other customers, and partners at other national laboratories to communicate results and provide expert opinion. Finally, you will help strengthen the group's network of industry and academic partners. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will be required to do the following:• Conduct modeling, analysis, and laboratory measurements of electromagnetic fields for wireless power transfer• Publish articles in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and present papers at national and international conferences and events• Uphold INL's safety-focused culture, demonstrating commitment to safe behavior and continuous improvement of safe practices• Continuously engage in dialogue with colleagues within and outside the group to openly share ideas and seek diverse opinions• Expect colleagues to challenge assumptions and be willing to dispassionately defend and improve scientific reasoning • Peer reviews of others' work and participate in peer reviews of his or her own work• Provide thought leadership in meetings and forums with INL colleagues, DOE, other national labs, and other external stakeholders.• Help establish INL's future transportation research strategy and advise the Department of Energy on national research priorities. QualificationsQualified candidates will meet the following criteria:• PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years • PhD in physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or related discipline, with research experience in EM field modeling, analysis, and laboratory measurement• Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills in EnglishThe ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:• Proficiency programming in LabView and Matlab, C#, Python, or other equivalent software environments• Have experience designing, developing, and/or experimenting with high-voltage electrical equipment• Development or diagnostic experience with controller area networks (CAN) and power line communication (PLC) Selective Service Requirements To be eligible for employment at INL males between ages 18 and 25 must register (or must have registered) with the Selective Service System (SSS). This includes U.S. born and naturalized citizens, parolees, undocumented immigrants, legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, refugees, and all males with visas of any kind which expired more than 30 days ago. The few individuals who are exempt from this requirement are those on current non-immigrant visas.
