Description
The Post-Doctoral Psychological Assistant provides psychological services to child, adolescent and adult inpatient, outpatient and Emergency Department (ED) clients and their families under the direct supervision of the Staff Psychologists. All services provided by the Post-Doctoral Psychological Assistant, for example psychological consultation, psychological and psychosocial assessment, 5150 Mental Health evaluations and client disposition/community referral, treatment planning, interventions, discharge planning and clinical supervision of doctoral psychology interns, will be supervised by a Staff Psychologist. Post-Doctoral Psychological Assistant performs other duties as assigned.
Receives training from the clinical psychology staff and gains practical experience conducting psychological evidence based interventions and assessment/consultation. Duties may include: including individual and group therapy, 5150 evaluations in the Emergency Department (ED) and assists with Patient dispositions and community referrals; provides brief, targeted behavioral health and group therapy in the ED, screening, testing and consultation working with children, adolescents and adults; involved in other psychological evidence based methods of behavior modification; administers, scores, and interprets psychological tests as needed; conducts psychosocial assessment; collaborates with client to create a safety plan and assesses for safety; consults with psychiatrists, ED physicians and other multidisciplinary treatment team members; interviews clients and conducts collaterals interviews when appropriate for treatment and evaluations; provides psychosocial assessment which includes testing, interpretation, report writing and feedback to clients, family and treating providers; is involved in crisis intervention and risk management of clients; provides clinical supervision to doctoral psychology interns under the direct supervision of the Staff Psychologists; adheres to APA standards and competencies; Demonstrates understanding of DSM IV Diagnostic Criteria for Disorders in Children, Adolescents and adults. Clinical works settings may include the inpatient unit, outpatient’s Partial Hospitalization/Intensive Outpatient Program, and the ED. Gains supervised experience in other clinical settings as assigned.
The post-doctorate psychological assistant exhibits professional values and ethics in service delivery, behavior, and comportment; Consistently articulates professional values; Takes independent action to correct situations that in are conflict with professional values; Utilizes verbal and non-verbal communications that are appropriate to the professional context, including challenging interactions; Is respectful to the beliefs and values of colleagues, even when inconsistent with personal beliefs and values; Demonstrates integration of science in professional practice. Demonstrates frequent congruence between own and others’ assessment and seeks to resolve incongruities; Consistently recognizes and addresses own problems, minimizing interference with competent professional functioning; Accurately identifies level of competence across all competency domains; Anticipates and self-identifies disruptions in functioning and intervenes at an early stage with minimal support from supervisors; post-doctorate psychological assistant relates effectively and meaningfully with individuals, groups, and/or communities.
The post-doctorate understands research, research methodology, and techniques for data collection and analysis, and demonstrates respect for scientifically-derived knowledge.
The post-doctorate psychological assistant demonstrates awareness, sensitivity and skills in working professionally with diverse individuals, groups and communities who represent various cultural and personal background and characteristics; post-doctorate psychological assistant applies ethical concepts and exhibits an awareness of legal issues regarding professional activities with individuals, groups, and organizations; Adheres to APA ethical principles and guidelines.
This is a limited-term position with an anticipated duration of approximately one year.
Qualifications
Education:
-This is a position for a candidate who has completed all of his/her doctoral graduate work in Clinical or Counseling Psychology who needs supervised psychotherapy experience to obtain licensure
APA accredited graduate program preferred
-Completion of an accredited pre-post-doctorate psychological assistantship required (minimum 1500 hours of Supervised Professional Experience)
-APA accredited pre-doctoral psychology internship highly preferred
-Incumbents will be required to register as a Psychological Assistant with the California Board of Psychology after hire under our organization’s license
Knowledge:
-Knowledge of the principles and techniques of clinical psychology
Knowledge and adherence to APA competencies and standards
-Skills in evidence based clinical practices and methods
-Thorough knowledge of human development, psychological treatment, and intervention modalities with children, adolescents and adults is required
-Must have knowledge of and adherence to American Psychological Association ethical standards
-Must have knowledge of the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, and psychotherapeutic modalities and interventions
-Ability to plan, implement, evaluate and report/document activities conducted
-Ability to communicate effectively in writing and to prepare written reports
-Ability to communicate orally, both in person and by telephone
-Ability to establish rapport with others as a requisite for healthy and therapeutic relationships
-Ability to present oneself in an appropriately personable and professional manner to peers and staff
-Ability to receive and utilize constructive feedback regarding performance, presentation and relationships with others
-Ability to be both and flexible as circumstances warrant
-Ability to effectively weigh and evaluate personal needs, client needs and the aims and policies of the agency and to respond and negotiate these competing needs as appropriate
-Ability to remain calm and supportive in psychological emergencies and/or crises when provided with appropriate supervision and direction; ability to assess safety and risk and create safety plan
-An enhanced level of self-awareness as to how he or she relates to others and an ability to effectively modulate this personal style as conditions warrant
-Ability to communicate via computer email
-Must adhere to supervision standards
Experience:
Prior work experience providing evidence based treatment (e.g. ACT, DBT, CBT, MI, Seeking Safety), consultation, risk/safety assessment and planning, psychological testing, and 5150 evaluations in an inpatient, intensive outpatient (e.g. Partial Hospitalization/Intensive Outpatient Program), and the Emergency Department (ED) psychiatric treatment setting preferred
-Prior work experience working with children, adolescents, adults and their families preferred
-Prior work experience in teaching/training and supervision preferred
-Prior work experience with risk and crisis assessment and stabilization in an acute setting preferred
Physical Requirements:
-Adequate hearing for perceiving/interpreting verbal communications without seeing the speaker is required
-Must demonstrate clear speech delivery to enable listeners to understand verbal communications
-Sufficient physical agility and endurance to work with children, especially in playroom settings and to work with adolescents, especially in Group Therapy is required
-Must have the ability to remain seated for at least one hour to complete interview/therapeutic sessions
