GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Cotman laboratory in the Center for Genomic Medicine at MGH is seeking a motivated postdoctoral research fellow to join a team of researchers investigating the molecular basis of inherited lysosomal diseases and the role of the lysosome in neurodegeneration, with a primary focus on the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis disorders (NCL). The research fellow will utilize cell culture, molecular and cell biological techniques, and disease-relevant human cell and mouse models to further develop projects aimed at better understanding the molecular basis of these disorders, identifying drug targets, and carrying out proof-of-concept translational studies.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintenance and experimental culturing of iPS and neuronal cell lines

Design, execute, and interpret research experiments of relevance to the NCL research program

Carrying out biochemical and molecular biology techniques to investigate NCL-related proteins (e.g. enzyme assays, mass spectrometry based assays, immunoblotting, immunostaining)

Utilizing epifluorescence and confocal microscopy equipment, performing image analysis

Preparation of written data reports, including methodology, figure preparations, written description of the study in the form of manuscripts and/or progress reports

Contribute to scientific literature and present research at scientific forums

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Excellent organizational skills

Ability to make independent effective decisions

Ability to solve technical issues

Ability to anticipate problems and develop contingency plans to deal with them

Able to work effectively as part of a team but also independently

Demonstrated ability to work independently and productively

Ability to adapt to shifting priorities in response to changing deadlines and needs of the lab
