Postdoctoral Fellow Position
Bladder Biomechanics and Urodynamics
The major thrust of the Klausner/Speich Bladder Biomechanics and Urodynamics Laboratory is to develop new techniques to improve the treatment of overactive bladder through the study of bladder biomechanics and the development of novel urodynamics techniques. Our multidisciplinary lab combines expertise in from urology, engineering and physiology. We are specifically focused on 1) developing novel metrics for acute dynamic elasticity, bladder geometry changes, spontaneous low amplitude rhythmic contractions, bladder wall micromotion and patient-reported sensation during the filling phase of both urodynamic and oral hydration studies and 2) using these metrics to identify subtypes of overactive bladder. We also perform basic science studies using bladder animal models to identify underlying mechanisms. Specifically, we study adjustable preload tension, low amplitude rhythmic contractions and blood flow and their associations with overactive bladder. Our studies range from mechanical and pharmacological studies on detrusor smooth muscle strips and isolated whole bladders to in vivo animal studies to clinical urodynamics studies on urologic patients. Our techniques include multi-scale biomechanical modeling, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) signal analysis, 3D ultrasound image and video analysis, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and sensation kinetics. The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in all aspects of our studies; however, the focus of the postdoctoral project will depend on the candidate's background and interests. Our research is supported by NIH grant R01 DK101719.
Preferred qualifications: Ph.D. in engineering, biophysics, physiology, biology or other relevant field; strong writing skills; ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
